About the Role

The Psych Peer Specialist is an active member of the CPEP Team and provides peer support services to patients with serious mental illnesses. This role functions as a role model to peers, serves as a consumer advocate, and promotes community socialization, recovery, self-advocacy, self-help, and the development of natural support.

Responsibilities

  • Provide peer support services to patients with serious mental illnesses.
  • Function as a role model to peers, exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills.
  • Serve as a consumer advocate, providing consumer information and peer support.
  • Promote community socialization, recovery, self-advocacy, self-help, and development of natural support.
  • Assist in the acceptance and triage of newly referred patients.
  • Accompany Mobile Crisis staff on field visits.
  • Provide prompt assistance in responding to patient emergencies.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Certificate from state-approved peer specialist training program from OMH
  • Active BLS from AHA
  • Must live within a commutable distance to NYP.

Skills

  • Bilingual English/Spanish
  • Previous experience working with multi-cultural and/or underserved communities
