About the Role
The Psych Peer Specialist is an active member of the CPEP Team and provides peer support services to patients with serious mental illnesses. This role functions as a role model to peers, serves as a consumer advocate, and promotes community socialization, recovery, self-advocacy, self-help, and the development of natural support.
Responsibilities
- Provide peer support services to patients with serious mental illnesses.
- Function as a role model to peers, exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills.
- Serve as a consumer advocate, providing consumer information and peer support.
- Promote community socialization, recovery, self-advocacy, self-help, and development of natural support.
- Assist in the acceptance and triage of newly referred patients.
- Accompany Mobile Crisis staff on field visits.
- Provide prompt assistance in responding to patient emergencies.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- Certificate from state-approved peer specialist training program from OMH
- Active BLS from AHA
- Must live within a commutable distance to NYP.
Skills
- Bilingual English/Spanish
- Previous experience working with multi-cultural and/or underserved communities
