About the Role

Shrub Oak International School (SOIS) is a therapeutic day and residential school for autistic children, adolescents, and young adults with complex co-occurring conditions. Responsibilities

  • Conducts assessments, interprets data, and uses results to inform instruction, curriculum development, and task-analysis.
  • Designs, delivers, and adapts academic, life-skills, and vocational instruction to meet individualized student needs.
  • Participates and/or leads in IEP or intervention processes.
  • Implements evidence-based instructional practices aligned with organizational mission, goals, and learning outcomes.
  • Collects, analyzes, and maintains data, records, and documentation across academic, social, and emotional domains.
  • Communicates effectively in both written and verbal formats.
  • Builds strong, collaborative relationships with students, peers, and cross-department teams.
  • Provides guidance and oversight to classroom staff to ensure high-quality, individualized instruction.
  • Supports students with self-care needs and behavior management, including the use of de-escalation techniques.
  • Stays current with laws, regulations, and best practices in special education and maintains ongoing professional growth.
  • Uses technology effectively for organization, data collection, reporting, and instructional support.
  • Demonstrates cultural competence, sensitivity, and responsiveness to diverse students, families, and staff.
  • Manages multiple priorities with critical thinking and composure during crises while handling highly challenging and aggressive behaviors with professionalism.
  • Completes and maintains required trainings, including TCIS.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Special Education or related field.
  • NYS Special Education Teaching Certificate required.
  • Experience using instructional technology and digital tools to support teaching and learning.
  • Knowledge of federal law (IDEA), state regulations, national standards, and best practices in special education.
  • Familiarity with educational and vocational assessments, data collection, and data-driven decision-making.
  • Content-area expertise and ability to design instruction aligned with student needs.
  • Experience working with middle and high school students with Autism and related disorders.
  • Ability to ambulate around the campus, including hills, stairs, grass and gravel.
  • Ability to react and move quickly during student crisis, both for the safety of the student and for the staff.
  • Ability to run across the campus and throughout the school to catch/monitor an eloping student, and/or to remove yourself from an unsafe situation.
  • Must be able to pass TCIS (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Training for Schools).
  • Ability to bend, stretch, sit, stand, crouch or kneel for sustained periods of time if implementing a hold.
