About the Role
As an Intake Specialist, you will manage incoming referrals for Durable Medical Equipment (DME) by reviewing documentation, verifying insurance, and ensuring accurate order entry to help patients recover safely at home.
Responsibilities
- Review incoming referrals for completeness and accuracy
- Communicate with physicians, referral sources, insurance companies, and patients to obtain missing information
- Verify insurance eligibility, benefits, and coverage using payer portals
- Initiate and monitor prior authorizations
- Confirm medical necessity and patient qualification per payer guidelines
- Enter patient demographics, prescriptions, diagnosis codes, HCPCS codes, and billing information into the ERP system
- Ensure documentation meets payer requirements and internal compliance standards
- Collaborate with billing, documentation, customer service, and operations teams
- Maintain accurate records of insurance verification, authorizations, and qualification details
- Meet productivity and quality standards
- Provide backup support for walk-in patients
- Protect confidential patient information and maintain HIPAA compliance
- Contribute to process improvements and department initiatives
Requirements
- 1–3 years of experience in healthcare insurance verification, medical billing, or related field
- Experience verifying insurance benefits and obtaining prior authorizations
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ERP or order management systems
- Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced healthcare environment
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
