About the Role

Apicha Community Health Center is seeking a Dental Assistant for its Jackson Heights location to support dental care delivery by preparing treatment rooms, patients, instruments, and materials, passing instruments and materials, and performing procedures in compliance with the dental practice.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of chairside and clinical/laboratory support functions.
  • Prepare treatment operatory, position instruments and equipment.
  • Monitor patient comfort.
  • Assist in maintaining treatment records and operatory equipment and instruments.
  • Responsible for the sterilization, preparation, and inventory control of dental instruments and supplies.
  • Take and record medical and dental histories of patients.
  • Facilitate related services for health center clients as appropriate with respect to their confidentiality and privacy.
  • Instruct patients in oral hygiene and plaque control programs.
  • Schedule appointments, generate and close encounters, prepare bills and receive payment for dental services, complete insurance forms, and maintain clerical records.
  • Alert the Director of Dental Services of malfunctioning equipment.
  • Call laboratory to pick up denture cases.
  • Log in denture cases delivered to the clinic by the lab.
  • Answer telephone in dental suite and take messages while dentist is treating.
  • Help obtain “Time Out” and “Consent” of necessary patients.
  • Travel between clinics.
  • Prepare patient and patient room for dentist’s examination and treatment.
  • Sterilize, disinfect, and dispose of any operatory and instruments and/or materials adhering to OSHA guidelines for a safe work environment.
  • Prepare materials and assist dentist during dental procedures.
  • Utilize four-handed dentistry techniques to prepare and dispense materials chairside and assist the dental provider(s).
  • Take and record vitals with medical and dental histories of patients.
  • Expose, develop, and mount dental diagnostic radiographs as delegated and directed by the Dentist in accordance with state regulation and law and department directive and protocol.
  • Pour, trim, and polish study casts.
  • Assist dentist in management with all dental procedures, i.e. emergencies, oral surgery, prosthetic and restorative procedures.
  • Maintain and monitor dental equipment, inventory: ordering, distribution of stock, and storage.
  • Perform all functions in full compliance with the health center and the department’s Exposure Control Plan including but not limited to the use of Personal Protective Equipment and Universal Precautions.
  • Professionally assist patient care in line with the organization’s mission and goals, while upholding HIPAA policies.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited New York dental assisting program by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association required.
  • Basic CPR (BLS) Certification.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.
  • Ability to communicate dental procedures and terminology with dental team and patient.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Reasoning Ability.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Engaged in learning and continuous quality improvement.
  • Excellent customer service skills are required.
  • Responsive and comfortable working in the fast-paced, high accountability environment.
