About the Role

The Counselor provides support and assistance to clients in a residential treatment setting, advocating for their rehabilitation needs and ensuring a smooth transition through their treatment plans.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct intake interviews with prospective clients
  • Orient new clients to the program and facility
  • Respond to psychiatric and medical emergencies
  • Perform crisis intervention work
  • Assist clients during facility evacuations
  • Develop and support client treatment plans
  • Communicate with referral sources and treatment personnel
  • Complete intake, discharge, and progress documentation
  • Initiate and participate in discharge planning
  • Lead or co-lead group sessions and house meetings
  • Assume primary case coordination responsibilities
  • Relay clinical and house-status information during shift changes
  • Monitor and record client medications
  • Participate in meal planning and preparation
  • Attend staff meetings, supervision, and case consultations
  • Maintain the physical plant and perform minor repairs
  • Report suspected client abuse
  • Promote social rehabilitation philosophy
  • Work overnight, awake and alert shifts
  • Comply with all laws, regulations, and agency policies
  • Lead or participate in client recreational activities
  • Shop for household items with clients
  • Drive clients to treatment-related destinations

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a mental health related field or equivalent experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Demonstrate good judgment and emotional stability
  • Ability to negotiate several flights of stairs multiple times per shift
  • Ability to lift and carry 20 lb. packages
  • Ongoing clearance with the California State Department of Social Services
  • Maintain training certification for First Aid and CPR
