About the Role
The Head of Power Electronics will own everything between the generator shaft and the customer's bus, defining the power conversion system end to end, including conversion, protection, controls interfaces, and schemes for multiple units to operate as one plant. This role involves making build-versus-buy decisions, managing partners and suppliers, writing specifications, qualifying hardware, and integrating systems. As the team grows, you will hire and lead the power electronics team.
Responsibilities
- Define the power conversion system end to end: conversion, protection, controls interfaces, and the schemes that let hundreds of units run as one plant.
- Make the build-versus-buy call for every block and defend it with numbers.
- Select partners, write specifications, qualify hardware, integrate it, and stand behind it on the test stand.
- Hire and lead the power electronics team as in-house scope grows.
Requirements
- Deep hands-on experience in high-voltage DC power conversion.
- Experience in the EV industry, including traction inverters, 800 V platforms, onboard chargers, and DC fast charging.
- Design experience with wide-bandgap semiconductors (SiC and GaN) at real power levels.
- Experience taking converters from schematic through layout, magnetics, thermal, and EMC into production.
- Understanding of factors that cause converter failure in the field.
- Ability to determine when a converter is a commodity versus a differentiator.
- Comfortable owning supplier relationships, writing source-control specifications, and running qualification testing.
- Ability to move quickly between architecture and detail without losing rigor.
- Experience with hardware operation and understanding of simulation accuracy and limitations.
