About the Role
Assist in all basic functions of the Herbarium by carrying out a wide variety of daily herbarium tasks.
Responsibilities
- File specimens into the Herbarium and maintain/curate the collection to reflect new determinations and taxonomic revisions.
- Process newly collected specimens for determination and maintain meticulous records.
- Digitize specimens, including imaging and data entry of label information into the internal database.
- Assist visiting researchers with Herbarium use and update/file specimens they have worked with.
- Attend staff meetings.
- Participate in public outreach.
Requirements
- Experience working in a herbarium is preferred.
- Undergraduate degree in biology, preferably with coursework in taxonomy.
- Organized with the ability to switch between different tasks easily.
- Familiarity with scientific plant names and geography.
- Understanding of data handling, with experience in databases and/or spreadsheets.
- Ability to reach specimens in cabinets 8 ft high and at ground level.
- Knowledge of Spanish or Portuguese is a plus.
- Ability to reach specimens in cabinets up to 11ft high (via ladder or rolling stairs).
- Ability to crouch, bend, and reach with hands and arms.
- Ability to carry and move up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to move a rolling herbarium cart.
