About the Role

The Research Scientist I will be responsible for the analysis of ultra-trace levels of organic chemicals in human and environmental specimens. This position will contribute to the development and validation of high-resolution mass spectrometric methods and maintain LC-MS/MS and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) instruments. This role is part of a dynamic team serving the Wadsworth Center’s mission in the New York State Department of Health’s efforts to protect and promote the health of New York’s citizens.

Responsibilities

Analysis of ultra-trace levels of organic chemicals in human and environmental specimens including sample preparation, extraction, instrumental analysis, data analysis, and preparation of data reports.
Contributing to the development and validation of high-resolution mass spectrometric methods for the analysis of ultra-trace levels of organic chemicals in human and environmental specimens.
Maintenance of LC-MS/MS and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) instruments.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a related field and two years of research experience; OR a master’s degree in a related field and one year of research experience.
Selected candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location.
Selected candidate must be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts, prior to hire.

Skills

Method development and analysis of a multiclass of environmental chemicals comprising of plasticizers, environmental phenols, and pesticides through a single extraction and LC-MS/MS analysis in human biological specimens such as urine and blood.
Measuring single class organic environmental chemicals such as perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), organophosphate ester (OPFR) flame retardants and plasticizers (OPFR), oxidative stress biomarkers, pesticides, plasticizers, environmental phenols, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), tobacco metabolites, forest fire biomarkers, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in human biological specimens at ultra trace levels.
Participating in NIH funded human biomonitoring research projects.
Participating in proficiency testing programs.

$69,764.00 Annually
$4,000 annual downstate adjustment (pro-rated for part-time positions)
