About the Role

As an Underwriting Director in the Ocean Cargo practice, you will lead profitable growth, underwriting excellence, broker engagement, and talent development. You will manage a complex portfolio of marine risks while serving as a trusted advisor to brokers, clients, and internal partners, combining technical expertise with strategic leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite and manage a complex portfolio of Ocean Cargo and Marine business.
  • Evaluate exposures, financial performance, operational risks, loss trends, and catastrophe accumulations.
  • Ensure pricing adequacy and disciplined execution of underwriting strategies.
  • Monitor portfolio performance and develop actions to improve profitability and market positioning.
  • Exercise underwriting authority and provide referral guidance on complex risks.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with brokers, agents, clients, and distribution partners.
  • Drive agency and broker engagement strategies.
  • Identify emerging market opportunities and strengthen market position.
  • Represent the company in industry associations, customer meetings, and marketing initiatives.
  • Mentor, coach, and develop underwriting talent.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team environment.
  • Serve as a technical resource and referral partner.
  • Contribute to underwriting strategy, product development, and process improvement.
  • Analyze market conditions, competitive trends, and emerging risks.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to advance strategic priorities.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of Ocean Cargo and/or Ocean Marine underwriting experience.
  • Experience with complex middle-market and large account exposures.
  • Expertise in ocean cargo, logistics, warehousing, stock throughput, and global supply chain exposures.
  • Proven ability to manage underwriting authority and complex risk selection.
  • Strong financial acumen regarding pricing adequacy, loss ratio management, and growth metrics.
  • Proven success in relationship management with brokers, agents, and clients.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel within assigned territory.
  • Established network within the Ocean Marine marketplace preferred.
  • Experience leading underwriting teams and mentoring talent preferred.
  • Experience contributing to underwriting strategy or process transformation preferred.
  • Marine insurance designations such as CPCU, ARM, or AMIM preferred.
