Responsibilities

• Remains current in practice in the field of ultrasonic technology.
• Works independently and communicates effectively with physicians and other healthcare team members.
• Captures clear and precise ultrasound images, including all required anatomy.
• Understands infection control issues associated with practice.
• Maintains knowledge of Joint Commission standards and other regulatory bodies' expectations.
• Maintains a professional demeanor at all times.
• Performs various ultrasound studies, including echoencephalography, echocardiography, abdominal, retroperitoneal, obstetrics/gynecology, and doppler.
• Operates complex ultrasound equipment pertinent to department needs.
• Utilizes ancillary devices to obtain a permanent record of examinations.
• Selects proper transducer frequency and diameter for examination performance.
• Recognizes the significance of all visualized structures, differentiating artifact from normal or pathological processes.
• Determines if anatomy is normal or abnormal, delineates abnormalities, and extends the scope of the study appropriately.
• Deviates from normal technique when necessary and develops better techniques.
• Provides technical assistance for amniocentesis.
• Performs frequent calibration checks, calibrates, adjusts, and maintains ultrasound equipment.
• Participates in reading sessions with physicians, contributing technical and professional knowledge to diagnostic impressions or reports.
• Reviews pathology, surgical, and delivery reports to follow patient progress and review examination accuracy.
• Continues review of anatomy, physiology, and the effect of disease processes on the human body in relation to ultrasonics.
• Evaluates new products and equipment for potential future use.
• Records and files examinations daily, coding cases for billing preparation.
• Ensures timely dissemination of reports to referring physicians.
• Assists in training new technologists and orienting staff to new techniques, research projects, and in-service education.
• Provides demonstrations of ultrasonic equipment for staff and visitors.
• Instructs student sonographers in patient evaluation, ultrasonic evaluation, and examination techniques.
• Completes official sonogram reports within 24 hours of the scan.
• Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly, demonstrating proficiency in probe cleaning and processing procedures.
• Communicates appropriately and clearly to physicians, staff, PCM, and the administrative team.
• Maintains good working relationships within the department and with other departments.
• Maintains departmental statistics, accurate recordings, and appropriate documentation for each patient.
• Maintains order and cleanliness of equipment and the ultrasound area.
• Prepares patients for examinations and explains procedures while performing studies.
• Consults with referring physicians regarding patient history and determines appropriate ultrasonic procedures.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or Equivalent.
• ARDMS certification required.
• Satisfactory completion of formal ultrasound technology training in an AMA-approved school.
• Good communication skills (written, verbal, and telephone).
• Proficient in NT, Nasal Bone, Tricuspid flow, Uterine Artery, Front-Maxillary Facial Angle, Ductus Venous Scans.
• Must possess some degree of independent judgment and discretion in performing procedures.
