About the Role

The Crisis Shelter Shift Leader ensures continuity of services for up to 120 youth and on-site staff, serving as the primary point person during their shift. This role involves supporting all program aspects, engaging youth holistically, and maintaining a safe, clean, and well-maintained site.

Responsibilities

  • Welcome youth and orient them to site expectations.
  • Perform youth engagement and program support.
  • Engage, supervise, and support youth residing at the Shelter.
  • Ensure the site, including youth rooms, is clean and in good condition.
  • Ensure youth comply with curfew expectations and schedule structure.
  • Assist youth with preparation for their day.
  • Monitor programs and youth activities to promote a safe and secure environment.
  • Engage with youth during mealtimes and facilitate post-meal cleanup.
  • Assist youth with activities of daily living (ADLs).
  • Provide support to Direct Service Managers and Case Managers, including managing youth appointments, collecting/filing paperwork, and digital file maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate records in the Efforts to Outcomes (ETO) electronic case management system, documenting engagements and touchpoints.
  • Complete Incident and behavior communication reports as per regulations.
  • Follow program procedures as directed.
  • Maintain healthy, supportive relationships with youth, with appropriate boundaries.
  • Participate in recreational and holiday activities and off-site trips.
  • Complete and submit incident reports by the end of the shift.
  • De-escalate crises and attend to emergencies following agency protocol.
  • Communicate with staff to ensure safe and secure operations.
  • Ensure sufficient staffing at the Shelter sites.
  • Coordinate crisis interventions and ensure appropriate follow-up.
  • Assign tasks to staff and ensure completion and follow-up.
  • Perform operational tasks as assigned.
  • Serve as the point person for program communication during assigned shifts.
  • Assign breaks according to company policy.
  • Work in an environment where precautions for communicative diseases and health concerns may need to be observed and followed.
  • Determine when to contact superiors for serious emergencies.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma with at least one year of successful experience working with young adults.
  • Interest in working with youth who have experienced homelessness.
  • Strong multi-tasking skills.
  • Strong de-escalation skills.
  • Positively respond to supervision and coaching.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Willing and able to move throughout the day.
  • Upbeat, creative, and fun demeanor.
  • Able to use Motivational Interviewing to engage youth and assist in their successful planning.
  • Strong focus on child protection and ensuring the safety of residents.
  • Overall flexibility in work schedule, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • Adherence to attendance and punctuality requirements.
  • Dedicated to the mission of Covenant House.
