About the Role
The Tax Managing Director, State and Local Taxation is responsible for providing written tax advice, evaluating actions to lessen tax burden, and identifying tax risks and regulatory changes. This role involves marketing, networking, business development, and maintaining client relationships, while serving as a key member of the Tax Services leadership team for complex tax guidance.
Responsibilities
- Conducts appropriate research and analyzes findings.
- Prepares studies of tax implications and outlines alternative courses of action.
- Partners with other tax professionals to resolve complex matters.
- Ensures clients comply with authorities and minimizes tax burdens.
- Manages engagements to achieve metrics.
- Collaborates with Business Development to drive sales tax compliance services.
- Handles inquiries from federal and state agencies regarding tax issues.
- Drafts responses to examiner questions and challenges.
- Monitors implementation of tax consulting project work plans.
- Provides recommended solutions by combining tax knowledge and business/industry knowledge.
- Represents clients before tax authorities on contested issues.
- Acts as an industry expert in SALT.
- Identifies cross-selling opportunities with other tax specializations.
- Manages SALT services provided to assigned clients.
- Develops tools or improvements to enhance SALT practice efficiency or services.
- Prepares tax accrual workpapers.
- Understands and applies industry standards, firm policies, and BDO Tax Quality Manual requirements for FAS 109 and FIN48.
- Recognizes, measures, and documents financial benefits to clients.
- Develops new or improved ideas to advance client, firm, or personnel positions through tax or expense reduction.
- Participates in relevant industry groups.
- Leads marketing campaigns and external SALT initiatives.
- Supervises the day-to-day workload of SALT Senior Managers, Managers, and Staff on assigned engagements and reviews work product.
- Ensures SALT Senior Managers, Managers, and Staff are trained on all relevant tax software.
- Evaluates the performance of SALT Senior Managers, Managers, and Staff, and assists in the development of goals and objectives for professional development.
- Delivers periodic performance feedback and completes performance evaluations for SALT Senior Managers, Managers, and Staff.
- Acts as Career Advisor to SALT Senior Managers, Managers, and Staff.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or other relevant field required.
- Ten (10) or more years of prior SALT experience required.
- Prior experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis required.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word, preferred.
- Exposure to and familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools, preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Superior analytical and research skills.
- Solid organizational skills, especially the ability to meet project deadlines with a focus on details.
- Ability to successfully multi-task while working independently or within a group environment.
- Ability to work in a deadline-driven environment and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Capable of effectively managing a team of tax professionals, and delegating work assignments, as needed.
- Capacity to build and maintain strong relationships with internal and client personnel.
- Ability to encourage team environment on engagements, and contribute to the professional development of assigned personnel.
- Executive presence and ability to act as primary contact on assigned engagements.
- Ability to successfully interact with professionals at all levels.
- Advanced knowledge of appropriate application of tax standards to ensure effective and efficient delivery of tax services.
- Advanced knowledge of sources of relevant information utilized in tax filings.
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of cause/effect for taxable conditions on clients and the potential tax issues.
