About the Role
The Kitchen Assistant works under the supervision of the Food Service Manager or Cook #2 to assist with the distribution, service, and clean-up of the meal program, ensuring high-quality care for senior residents.
Responsibilities
- Clean and sanitize food service areas, including equipment, kitchen, storage, and dining spaces.
- Perform dishwashing, pot washing, and other assigned cleaning duties.
- Assist with meal service setup and food preparation following NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene safety procedures.
- Receive food deliveries and ensure proper storage according to health regulations.
- Label, date, and rotate stock appropriately.
- Meet regularly with supervisors to discuss procedures and best practices.
- Collaborate with the team to maintain high levels of care and communication with residents.
- Work cooperatively with all staff and kitchen team members.
- Communicate resident progress, needs, and issues to appropriate staff.
- Attend required training sessions and conferences.
- Implement emergency procedures as necessary.
- Work independently when required.
Requirements
- Previous experience in a commercial kitchen.
- Ability to prepare nutritious and appealing meals.
- Ability to follow kitchen procedures and protocols.
- High school diploma or GED (or 4 years of relevant cooking/kitchen experience in lieu of GED).
- 6 months of experience as a Kitchen Assistant or Dishwasher.
- Proven cooking experience in a commercial kitchen serving 20 or more people.
- Active NYC food handler's certification.
- Ability to stand for extended periods, climb stairs, and lift at least 25 lbs.
- Ability to perform physical tasks including bending, pushing, pulling, and walking.
