About the Role
Provides leadership, vision, and direction for the finance function of Munich Re Canada Life Branch, overseeing capital planning, financial position, and treasury management. This executive role contributes to the overall strategy and success of Munich Re Canada (Life) at an executive level.
Responsibilities
- Partners with industry associations and develops strong relationships with industry experts, regulators, and working groups.
- Briefs senior management on key industry trends and future influences.
- Represents Munich Re at external associations, industry functions, working groups, and authorities to raise the profile of MLMC.
- Represents MLMC on financial topics globally within the Munich Re Group.
- Serves on Boards of Directors, committees, and other corporate governance roles as required.
- Oversees the Appointed Actuary of the Branch.
- Responsible for all regulatory functions related to external authorities (OSFI, FSCO, AMF) including the Branch’s Regulatory Capital Plan.
- Manages the preparation of all local regulatory required reports and documents for submission.
- Communicates capital needs with Home Office and manages the overall financial position, including asset and liability strategy and treasury/liquidity management.
- Leads discussions concerning accounting, financial reporting, treasury, and taxation matters.
- Establishes and maintains effective Financial Reporting and Valuation teams.
- Oversees the management of a successful Finance and Accounting team.
- Ensures the delivery of information and reports required by Home Office for the reinsurance division.
- Spearheads all activities related to any Group-wide finance and regulatory projects for the Branch.
- Consults and supports business line Executives in the preparation of quote-proposals and treaty negotiations.
- Oversees the investment manager (MEAG NY).
- Advises and supports business line managers on pricing assumptions, unusual arrangements, and implications on tax, foreign jurisdiction, and capital position ratios.
- Oversees the sound management of all regulatory and home office compliance functions.
- Ensures close coordination with U.S. Life counterparts to realize North American synergies and deliverables.
- Oversees the execution of the procurement function for Canadian Munich Re entities.
- Manages government international and domestic tax audits.
- Manages all tax legal matters to resolution.
- Develops relationships and partnerships with stakeholders within Munich Re to manage the delivery of tax and other project services.
- Coordinates the development of the Business Plan according to the annual planning process requirements of Home Office.
- Ensures alignment of business strategy amongst all lines of business.
- Provides regular updates to Home Office on the development of MLMC strategic initiatives.
- Collaborates with client-facing teams on financially-motivated reinsurance business development.
- Participates actively in the development and implementation of strategic and growth initiatives.
- Supports all innovation activities by providing financial reporting and corporate oversight.
- Supports related corporate finance activities, e.g., capital planning or M&A.
- Establishes controlling processes for non-insurance activities.
- Fulfills board mandates as needed.
- Creates an environment of teamwork, collaboration, and excellence by instilling company values.
- Hires, develops, and retains a top talent team.
- Fosters a culture of feedback with timely feedback given to employees and other Munich Re team members.
- Engages in regular development discussions with employees to coach on career growth and development.

Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience as Senior Financial Executive.
- Proven ability to create, develop, and implement creative financial management strategies.
- Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development, and analysis.
- Demonstrated leadership, Executive presence, and team management skills.
- Experience representing company interests to government agencies, funding agencies, and/or the general public.
- Proven history of creating, growing, and sustaining a strong productive team.
- Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills.
