About the Role
The Erie County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) seeks a full-time Bilingual (Spanish-English) immigration paralegal to represent detained clients facing deportation at the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility in Batavia, NY. This public defender model program offers a hybrid remote/in-office schedule after an initial 3-month period and values work/life balance with reasonable working hours.
Responsibilities
- Perform client intakes and filings at the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility.
- Assist attorneys with country conditions research, translations, and preparing legal documents.
- Maintain client files.
- Provide general office support including data entry, filing, and phone management.
- Complete on-the-job training.
- Travel locally to the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility and occasionally to the Buffalo office.
Requirements
- Fluency in Spanish and English.
- Ability to collect and manage data.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with various staff and partners.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in Spanish and English.
- Ability to multitask, be proactive, and flexible in a fast-paced environment.
- Organizational skills for tracking work and reporting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Outlook).
- Understanding of case management systems like LegalServer.
- Knowledge of basic office technology (mailing, faxing, scanning, copying).
- Sincere ability and desire to work with low-income immigrants and their families.
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn immigration law and procedure.
- Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle.
