About the Role

Ripple is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to set technical direction and own the architecture of the compliance control plane. This role involves driving the evolution of a vendor-agnostic, resilient system that prevents financial crime and ensures regulatory compliance across Ripple's product lines. It's an opportunity to define technical strategy, anticipate platform needs, and elevate engineering standards.

Responsibilities

  • Set architectural direction for the compliance control plane, including real-time screening orchestration, resilience and observability, vendor-agnostic integration, and the decision/data plane.
  • Design for future jurisdictional and product surface requirements.
  • Drive complex, ambiguous technical problems end-to-end, such as multi-vendor failover, sub-second decisioning under load, regulator-grade auditability, and resilience across partial dependency failures.
  • Translate evolving regulatory obligations and organizational goals into durable engineering primitives and a sequenced technical roadmap.
  • Anticipate platform risks and scaling constraints and lead initiatives to address them.
  • Partner with senior leaders to align complex cross-functional objectives.
  • Shape how regulatory requirements become engineering reality.
  • Set standards for production ownership, including observability, alerting, incident response, and reliability.
  • Mentor senior and mid-level engineers.
  • Elevate design quality across the team.
  • Act as a technical multiplier, improving the capabilities of those around you.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience building production backend systems.
  • Deep expertise in Java (or comparable JVM languages, Go, Rust).
  • Track record of owning architecture for complex distributed systems at scale.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive technical direction across teams and influence engineering decisions beyond your immediate scope.
  • Strong resilience and distributed-systems design instincts (failover, graceful degradation, idempotency, high-throughput real-time decisioning).
  • Excellent API design judgment (REST/gRPC) and ability to establish patterns.
  • Proven skill navigating ambiguity in a regulated environment.
  • Ability to turn regulator findings, audit obligations, and partner asks into shippable, durable engineering plans.
  • Working knowledge of Kubernetes.
  • Working knowledge of observability tooling (Grafana, OpenTelemetry, or similar).
  • Working knowledge of cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred).
  • History of mentoring engineers and lifting the technical bar of a team.
  • Experience in fintech, payments, identity, or compliance technology is a strong plus.
  • Exceptional systems architects from adjacent high-stakes domains are welcome.
