About the Role

CareerNext at SUNY Cobleskill is a fee-for-service program designed to support students in achieving academic success while completing their college degrees. The Academic Counselor plays a critical role in supporting student success by providing individualized, in-person academic support within a resource-room setting. This position focuses on helping students navigate coursework, strengthen executive functioning skills, and effectively utilize campus and accessibility resources. The Academic Counselor serves as a central advocate for students, working collaboratively with faculty, parents, and campus partners to promote academic progress and independence.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily, in-person academic support for students enrolled in credit-bearing coursework within a resource-room environment.
  • Assist students in planning, prioritizing, and managing weekly academic assignments, ensuring timely and successful completion and submission.
  • Conduct regular grade checks, track academic progress, and clarify assignment expectations in collaboration with students and faculty.
  • Support the development of executive functioning skills, including time management, organization, prioritization, and task initiation.
  • Advocate for students within the campus environment, communicating directly with professors regarding academic concerns, progress, and accommodations.
  • Guide students in appropriately using approved academic accommodations through the Disability/Accessibility Resource Office.
  • Coordinate and facilitate accessibility documentation, including reviewing, signing, and submitting accommodation letters to professors each semester.
  • Leverage campus resources to enhance student success, including coordinating enrollment in tutoring services and department-specific academic support programs.
  • Oversee onboarding for new and returning students each semester by reviewing course schedules, attending course registration as needed, and meeting with students, parents, and advisors to address questions or concerns.
  • Maintain consistent daily communication with students and parents, providing summaries of completed work, upcoming deadlines, and identified concerns.
  • Collaborate closely with CareerNext staff and coordinate meetings with students, parents, and team members when academic concerns arise.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in education, counseling, psychology, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience supporting students, particularly those with executive functioning challenges, learning differences, or disabilities.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, students, parents, and campus partners.
  • Knowledge of academic accommodations and accessibility processes within higher education preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to advocate for students while promoting independence and self-advocacy.
  • Demonstrates the importance of working as a team and related communication.
