About the Role

This role involves preparing hollow metal/stainless steel doors and panels, including hardware preparations, lite preparation, custom sizing, and metal work. The position requires interpreting shop orders and drawings to prep components to specifications, utilizing various metalworking techniques and tools.

Responsibilities

• Perform all aspects of preparation for hollow metal/stainless steel doors and panels.
• Complete hardware preps (locks, hinges, strikes, closers, etc.).
• Perform door lite preparation, including cutting openings, kit installation, and glazing.
• Install reinforcements and perform custom sizing of doors.
• Conduct metal work, including arc welding, cutting, grinding, polishing, cleaning, spray painting, and glass installation.
• Interpret shop orders, shop drawings, and hardware templates.
• Operate forklifts for material handling.
• Manage raw material inventory.
• Maintain 5-S standards and housekeeping of the Door Shop area.
• Support and participate in Continuous Improvement activities using Lean Manufacturing tools.
• Identify and obtain pertinent information from shop orders, shop drawings, and hardware templates.
• Set up and operate various bench and hand power tools (grinders, cut-off saws, band saw, plasma cutting torch).
• Set up and operate arc welding equipment.
• Work with sheet metal, body putty, sanding/grinding, spray painting, caulks, and glass.
• Work safely and maintain consistent quality at efficient productivity rates.
• Maintain accurate paperwork and record keeping for production history and inventory control.
• Accurately pull and mark doors required for jobs.
• Weld in flat, horizontal, and possibly vertical positions.
• Grind welds and body putty repairs flush and smooth.
• Clean and prep doors for prime paint touch-up.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and internal customers.
• Participate in door and process design and improvement activities.
• Assist in other operations, including warehouse support and special project installations.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• One to three months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to write simple correspondence.
• Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
• Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as area, circumference, and volume.
• Ability to apply concepts of basic geometry.
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
• Willingness to work with minimal supervision.
• Willingness to work individually and with others.
• Willingness to participate in problem solving and Lean Activities and identification of unsafe conditions related to job.
• Willingness to learn and understand basic principles of metal forming.
• Willingness to perform other activities as requested by supervisor and/or lead person.
• Must wear protective clothing, steel toe safety shoes, safety glasses, and ear plugs in designated work areas.
