About the Role

The Housing Specialist is responsible for all facets of client case management related to securing permanent housing. This role involves assisting clients in their housing search, utilizing incentives, developing contacts with housing developers, and ensuring clients understand housing program procedures.

Responsibilities

• Fully understand and articulate to clients the New York City Department of Homeless Services – Client Responsibility Procedures.
• Ensure clients sign the “Permanent Housing Agreement” Form within 10 days of arrival.
• Maintain open communication with the Director of Social Services/Caseworkers to resolve housing barriers.
• Ensure clients complete and return “Apartment Review” and/or “Client Apartment Rejection Form.”
• Articulate to clients their responsibility to visit/view two apartments per week and support with documentation.
• Ensure housing applications are completed appropriately within 90 days of eligibility and forwarded with a copy maintained in the case record.
• Utilize the DHS CARES system for intake assessment, service plans, housing, next steps, incident reports, and progress notes.
• Review accessible information from HRA, ACS, Department of Probation, and DHS using the CARES system.
• Ensure all information in the CARES system is updated in a timely fashion as required by DHS.
• Document and follow up on all housing appointments and permanent housing applications.
• Verify all housing rejections, including the reason for rejection.
• Accompany families on housing searches when appropriate.
• Provide ongoing housing education to clients through workshops and/or individual counseling.
• Provide clients with a list of suitable available apartments and advise them of their responsibility to seek additional apartments.
• Meet and/or exceed Housing Placement Goals set by the New York City Department of Homeless Services.
• Review housing placements and projected placements weekly with the DSS/APD.
• Complete reports as required.

Requirements

• Valid New York State driver’s license and an insurable driving record.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Computer literate in Microsoft-Office.
• May be required to work long hours and a varied schedule.
• Must be able to travel throughout various locations in the New York City area.
• Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 30 pounds several times a week.

• Associate degree considered in Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Criminal Justice or Human Services
