About the Role
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) works alongside individuals to help them achieve their Personal Outcomes, developing daily living, professional, and decision-making skills while supporting their health and safety.
Responsibilities
- Works with individuals to help them identify and realize their personal life goals.
- Advocates with individuals in a variety of situations.
- Teaches individuals new life skills.
- Promotes the health and safety of individuals.
- Assists individuals to overcome barriers and challenges to establishing and maintaining relationships and social roles.
- Works with individuals and the interdisciplinary team to develop service plans.
- Provides positive behavior support as necessary.
- Prevents, recognizes, and reports abuse toward individuals.
- Accurately documents service provision, daily notes, and other required information.
- Promotes and supports community involvement for individuals.
- Transports clients to external locations using a motor vehicle.
- Performs healthcare-related tasks, such as medication administration.
- Ensures all required documentation is completed appropriately, in a timely manner, and meets quality and compliance thresholds.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Administers bedside or personal care, such as ambulation or personal hygiene assistance.
- Cares for individuals during periods of incapacitation, family disruption, or convalescence.
- Performs housekeeping duties, such as cooking, cleaning, washing clothes or dishes, or running errands.
- Plans, shops for, or prepares nutritious meals or assists individuals in meal preparation.
- Communicates in a respectful manner with all people.
- Complies fully with confidentiality policies.
- Meets all safety training requirements and adheres to safety policies.
- Meets all job requirements for participating in or delivering training.
- Adheres to FREE’s standard of ethical behavior.
Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Valid NYS Driver’s License and satisfy criteria to be a driver for the agency is preferred.
Skills
- Proficient computer skills preferred
- Proficient writing skills with grasp of basic grammar and spelling
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment with flexibility, keeping others informed and anticipating needs
- Efficient
- Well organized
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to sit, walk and stand for prolonged periods (at least 8 hours)
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Ability to reach with hands and arms
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch or stand on a stool as needed
- Ability to lift 50 pounds at a time
