About the Role
The Kitchen Assistant will support the meal program by assisting with distribution, service, and clean-up, ensuring residents receive nutritious and appealing meals in a safe and supportive environment.
Responsibilities
- Clean food service areas, including equipment, kitchen, storage, and dining areas.
- Perform dishwashing, pot washing, and other assigned cleaning duties.
- Assist with meal service distribution and setup, including food preparation following food safety procedures.
- Accept food deliveries and ensure proper storage according to health regulations.
- Participate in labeling, dating, and rotating stock.
- Meet with supervisors to discuss food service, procedures, and best practices.
- Work as a team member to maintain a high level of care, respect, and communication with residents.
- Cooperate with all staff and kitchen team members.
- Share resident progress, needs, and problems with appropriate staff.
- Attend required training sessions and conferences.
- Implement emergency procedures as necessary.
- Work independently when required.
Requirements
- Previous experience in a commercial kitchen.
- Ability to prepare nutritious and appealing meals for residents.
- Ability to follow kitchen procedures and protocols.
- Proficient written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent organizational ability, time management, and interpersonal skills.
- Team-focused with the ability to work effectively with others.
- Desire or interest in working with and supporting senior residents.
- Must be able to stand for extended periods.
- Must be able to climb stairs.
- Must be able to lift at least 25lbs.

Experience Level
- 6-month experience as a Kitchen Assistant or Dishwasher
- Proven cooking experience in a commercial kitchen(s) serving twenty persons or more
Education Level
- High school diploma or GED required
- In lieu of GED, must have at least 4 years of relevant industry cooking/kitchen experience
- Active food handler's certification from the City of New York
