About the Role

This practicum position provides an opportunity to gain relevant experience in various public health areas, working alongside mentors in the field. The experience will be shared between the Departments of Health and Wellness and Agriculture, along with other partner departments, to protect the public from health hazards.

Responsibilities

• Assist Public Health Inspectors with organizing and conducting compliance inspections/audits, consultations, and educational functions in various settings.
• Assist with the development and maintenance of proper food handling practices and sanitary conditions within facilities.
• Assist partner agencies in conducting compliance inspections and audits of regulated activities.
• Assist Inspectors with outreach and educational functions.
• Assist in reporting and making recommendations to ensure public protection through investigation, approval, and certificate applications.
• Collaborate with multiple public health disciplines to gain experience in areas such as communicable disease case follow-up, prevention and control, infection control practices, and outbreak investigation.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled or recently enrolled in a full-time Public Health program accredited by the Board of Certification of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors.
• Preference for Public Health students who have recently completed their last year of study.
• Applicants in their 3rd year of a 4-year program or 1st year of a 2-year program may be considered.
• Must clearly specify academic status in the application.
• Experience in a client service-based industry is an asset.
• Experience in report writing is an asset.
• Experience presenting technical information is an asset.
• Demonstrate independent judgment, adaptability, and tact.
• Demonstrate the ability to assess health risks and provide recommendations on complex public health issues.
• Exhibit a high level of professionalism in high-pressure and sensitive situations.
• Must have a valid driver's license.
• Must have access to a reliable motor vehicle.
• Must include a copy of the driver's license with the application.
• Must indicate access to a vehicle to avoid being screened out.
