About the Role
The AI Security Institute is seeking a senior individual contributor to join its dedicated engineering function within the Chem Bio (CB) team. This role will focus on designing, building, and maintaining the shared platform, tooling, and infrastructure that support critical AI research projects related to advanced AI risks and chemical/biological misuse.
Responsibilities
- Design and build reliable systems, architecting and delivering core platform components for researcher experiments and results.
- Translate varied research needs into well-engineered, maintainable systems.
- Own and deliver significant engineering work, driving projects from design through maintenance.
- Write high-quality production code in Python, emphasizing testing, documentation, and observability.
- Contribute to engineering standards and practices to improve code quality and development workflows.
- Collaborate with other technical teams to share tooling and align on infrastructure.
- Support technical direction through architectural decisions and infrastructure improvements.
- Mentor other engineers through technical leadership, collaboration, code review, and knowledge sharing.
Requirements
- Significant experience writing production-level Python code that is scalable, robust, and easy to maintain.
- Strong infrastructure and platform skills, including experience with cloud environments (AWS), container orchestration (Kubernetes), and job scheduling (Slurm or similar).
- Experience owning technical projects or major systems as a senior individual contributor.
- Familiarity with the AI/ML ecosystem, including OpenAI-compatible APIs, PyTorch, and LLM-based systems tooling.
- Ability to work across multiple teams, understand varied research needs, and deliver reliable engineering solutions.
- A sense of mission, urgency, and responsibility for success, with a demonstrated ability to solve challenging problems and implement solutions efficiently.
- Motivated to build software with direct policy impact.
- Strong communication skills for effective collaboration in a dynamic, multidisciplinary team.
- Experience working in a research environment is a plus.
- Familiarity with computational biology tools, workflows, or datasets is a plus.
- Experience building or maintaining internal developer platforms, shared libraries, or CI/CD systems is a plus.
- Must be a UK national.
- Must be able to spend at least 9 days per fortnight working with the team.
- Must be willing to work from the London office at least 3 days/week.

- £65,000–£145,000 (Level 3: £65,000–£75,000, Level 4: £85,000–£95,000, Level 5: £105,000–£115,000, Level 6: £125,000–£135,000, Level 7: £145,000)
