About the Role

The Audio Visual Technician (as needed/on-call) provides assistance to the Audio Visual department during periods of peak workload or on special projects. This role requires flexibility to work varying hours and days on temporary assignments, ensuring seamless execution of events and programs through skilled technical support and client service.

Responsibilities

  • Set, operate, and strike audio visual equipment including audio mixers, sound systems, video cameras, projection, and lighting.
  • Provide customer service and represent the museum during public programs, lectures, meetings, and events.
  • Offer technical assistance to performance groups with audio mixing and microphone selection.
  • Assist clients with computers and presentation software (PowerPoint, Keynote) and virtual meeting platforms (Zoom, Facetime, WebEx, Streamyard).
  • Act as a technical coordinator for online platforms like Zoom and Streamyard.
  • Support the AV Manager and Digital Team in maintaining and troubleshooting digital displays.
  • Ensure the safety of staff, patrons, and guests in all audiovisual installations.
  • Provide technical support to staff, resolving issues or reporting them to IT.
  • Verify equipment is in good working order before events and perform spot repairs.
  • Return and store equipment in assigned locations, assisting with inventory control.
  • Maintain communication with event staff and perform related duties as required.
  • Install and remove audiovisual hardware, including speakers, computers, and monitors, in various spaces.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Two years of related work experience in audiovisual services, preferably in a museum or institution of higher learning, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Experience with technical supervision during Zoom meetings, webinars, and other platforms.
  • Working knowledge of microphones, portable sound systems, video projection, flat screen displays, Windows and Apple operating systems, presentation programs (PowerPoint, Keynote), lighting equipment, and staging equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures for handling and storing audiovisual equipment and electrical loads.
  • Experience with video conferencing platforms like Zoom, Facetime, and WebEx.
  • Ability to operate and maintain a broad variety of audiovisual equipment, including video cameras and conferencing equipment.
  • Ability to report to work on short notice and work evenings and weekends with maximum flexibility.
  • Ability to move heavy equipment and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, and customer service skills.
  • Punctual, dependable, conscientious, reliable, trustworthy, and detail-oriented.
  • Must present a professional appearance at all times.
  • Conscientious self-starter with proven ability to manage and independently prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Ability to perform equipment repairs; experience in equipment repair is a plus.
  • Familiarity with world music and traditional instruments is a plus.
