About the Role

The Head of School provides leadership through integrated planning, people-centered leadership, effective stewardship of resources, and engagement with staff, students, and external partners to deliver impact. The role reports directly to the Dean of Science to shape and realize the strategic priorities and performance of the university.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a strategic vision for the School aligned to UNSW Science 2035 Strategy and UNSW’s Progress for All.
  • Build a strategic vision for the School and engage staff to realize that vision.
  • Contribute to the Faculty’s strategic plans by providing strategic advice on external engagement, research, and educational priorities.
  • Drive the overall academic performance of the School in meeting University objectives.
  • Provide a valuable student education experience by fostering a culture of innovation and excellence in teaching.
  • Attract high calibre students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including higher degree research students, and life-long learners.
  • Enhance the research profile of the School by improving research output quality and quantity.
  • Develop financially beneficial new programs and courses in collaboration with academic staff and the Faculty.
  • Identify new prospects to collaborate with education, research, and industry partners.
  • Grow the international presence and reputation of the School.
  • Engage School staff to establish and maintain a collegial, supportive, and productive culture.
  • Attract and retain staff of the highest quality.
  • Build the capability of staff through effective talent management and succession planning.
  • Engage in activities that build and sustain excellent relationships with external stakeholders.
  • Lead and influence industry partners and research end-users to facilitate sustainable industry-supported collaborations.
  • Pursue and support equity, diversity, and inclusion objectives and policies.
  • Lead the School by setting clear expectations and goals, establishing KPIs, giving regular feedback, and facilitating career development conversations.
  • Be an active member of the Faculty Executive and contribute to overall leadership.
  • Take responsibility for devolved School budgets and comply with University financial requirements.
  • Influence income and expenditure to enhance financial sustainability.
  • Ensure the School meets agreed key performance measures.
  • Ensure the School is effectively administered, including resource allocation and compliance.
  • Lead School-based committees and boards and contribute to Faculty and University committees.
  • Oversee compliance and quality assurance management consistent with the University’s Risk Management Framework.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • A respected scholar, normally at an Associate Professor or Professorial level, in an appropriate discipline.
  • Understanding and appreciation of the values and roles of a major university operating in an international context.
  • Energy and resilience to deal with challenges and opportunities offered by an ambitious university.
  • Breadth of academic vision and intellectual enthusiasm encompassing the range of disciplines within the School and understanding key relationships outside the School.
  • Capacity to articulate a strategic vision for the School and ability to lead and manage change.
  • A strong, proactive, and energetic leader who can motivate high performance from diverse groups.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Representational skills to effectively take the School forward in internal and external forums.
  • Ability to manage budgets effectively and according to School and Faculty strategic priorities.
  • A strong sense of equity, fairness, and ethics.
  • Capacity to build and maintain effective collaborative partnerships within and external to the School.
  • Understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives, and values in action.
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities.
  • Commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
