About the Role
Design battery energy storage systems, including structures, control panels, HV/LV sub-systems, and heating/cooling systems. Own the design and release of multiple parts, meeting program milestones for quality, cost, functionality, weight, and timing. Develop, test, and validate all physical systems, including cooling and thermal performance. This role offers a unique opportunity to lead development within a rapidly growing company, ideal for someone with a background in mechanical engineering and experience in electric vehicles, structures, cooling systems, and battery pack integration. The position requires a hands-on engineer capable of supporting production line assembly.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of mechanical systems, products, and components.
- Assess strength, stiffness, and fatigue of components, assemblies, and full systems, conducting linear static and non-linear analyses.
- Perform conceptual analysis and hand calculations to develop and validate engineering designs and determine structural performance.
- Design and develop integrated EV and power electronic cooling and heating systems.
- Specify materials and components, and create detailed CAD drawings.
- Lead the generation and maintenance of system and component level DFMEAs.
- Conduct feasibility assessment and cost-benefit analyses.
- Identify and resolve design or manufacturing issues using CAD and analysis tools.
- Define testing activities to ensure durability, reliability, and functionality of system design, understanding regulatory requirements.
- Provide schemes, final designs, and release drawings aligned to project requirements.
- Support the creation of RFQ/RFI documents and supplier engagement.
- Collaborate with suppliers to improve cost, manufacturability, and quality of engineering designs.
- Provide technical guidance and support to technicians and system production.
- Facilitate the engineering release process from concept to finalized drawings.
- Lead change management processes, root cause analyses, and corrective actions.
- Lead the development and management of DVP&R schedules.
- Maintain knowledge of industry standards, regulations, and emerging technologies.
Requirements
- A minimum of four years’ post-graduate experience with mechanical structures and EVs.
- Excellent CAD skills (SolidWorks).
- Knowledge of materials, pressings, forming technologies, advanced joining for volume manufacture, and additive processes for prototyping.
- Experience in structural analysis (stress, stiffness, fatigue, optimisation).
- Proficiency in simulation tools, analyzing test data and correlating to CAE results.
- Understanding of typical battery characteristics, pack cooling, and thermal systems.
- Understanding of fluid mechanics and heat transfer principles.
- Excellent knowledge of GD&T, drawing, and assembly document creation.
- Experience in safe working practices around HV systems and legislative requirements.
- Experience in system/component delivery including FMEA, quality planning, PPAP.
- Ability to work proactively with minimal support using a logical approach in an environment with minimal documented processes.
- Must be self-motivated and an effective team player.
- Experience with electrical and mechanical EV components, including CAN protocol.
- Ability to challenge experts, consultants, and seniors by presenting a measured systematic first principles approach.
- Knowledge of battery and automotive standards (Reg100, UL9540A, UL1973).
