About the Role

Daedal Systems is seeking a Diagnostic Physicist to lead the design, deployment, and operation of Thomson Scattering diagnostics. This role involves bringing Thomson Scattering diagnostics from early-stage systems to industrialized, deployable solutions for integration on fusion devices.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, deployment, and operation of Thomson Scattering diagnostics.
  • Serve as the senior technical authority on Thomson measurement.
  • Bring Thomson Scattering diagnostics from low TRL, bench-top systems to industrialized, deployable systems.
  • Integrate Thomson Scattering systems on fusion devices across the industry.
  • Develop detailed diagnostic specifications.
  • Operate independently as a technical lead with minimal supervisory structure.
  • Support client systems around the globe.
  • Shape the measurement infrastructure that will be applied across the fusion industry.
  • Own your discipline and lead Thomson Scattering deployments from concept design to implementation and ongoing operational support.
  • Help shape the overall technical direction of Daedal's industrialized plasma diagnostic platform.

Requirements

  • Demonstrable track record designing and deploying Thomson scattering diagnostics on MCF fusion devices, measuring electron temperature and density profiles.
  • Experience developing detailed diagnostic specifications that translate physics measurement requirements (e.g. Te, ne, spatial and temporal resolution) into achievable instrument performance.
  • Direct experience with Thomson scattering subsystems: high-power pulsed laser systems, polychromators/spectrometers, and fast, low-light detectors (e.g. ICCD, streak camera, or avalanche photodiode arrays).
  • Experience with calibration techniques for Thomson scattering systems (e.g. Raman calibration for absolute density calibration).
  • Experience taking a diagnostic through its full lifecycle: design, procurement, build, test, installation, commissioning, calibration, operation, and maintenance.
  • Based in Toronto or willing to relocate.
  • Comfortable with travel to support client systems around the globe, up to 20% of the time, occasionally for 2+ weeks in a row.
