About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented experienced Ophthalmic Technician to join our team. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in assisting ophthalmologists with patient care and ensuring a smooth workflow within the practice. This position requires strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to providing excellent patient service in a clinical environment.

Responsibilities

• Inform patients of the purpose of all tests and procedures performed and how they will be affected during the tests.
• Obtain patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications.
• Perform accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks, including OCTs, IOL Master, Topography/Topographer, Fundus photos on an optos camera, HFA testing, and Pachymetry.
• Perform refractions.
• Perform Goldmann tonometry/Icare.
• Neutralize glasses prescription.
• Scribe/accurately document exams.
• Submit refills of medications.
• Submit prior authorizations for medications.
• Assist in minor surgeries if needed by MD.
• Sterilize instruments.
• Clean, stock, open/close exam and work up rooms.
• Maintain clean work area and patient areas.
• Help and answer questions of other staff members.
• Dispose of biohazard waste and sharps.
• Use paper and electronic medical records systems.
• Determine which patient should be next to be taken from the waiting room and initiate testing. Escort all patients from the waiting room for data collection. Advise the patient as to who will see them next and make them comfortable during the wait.
• Maintain a smooth flow of patients to the physician, altering the test sequence as required.
• Communicate with coworkers to facilitate proper patient flow.
• Check calibration of equipment, perform quality checks, and make adjustments or call for service as necessary.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent (required)
• At least 3+ years of Ophthalmology experience
• Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) designation (preferred)
• Excellent communication and customer service skills
• Willingness to learn all aspects of the job description, including testing equipment
• Basic skills and understanding of: Anatomy, Medical terminology specific to ophthalmology (QD, BID, OD, OS, OU, Etc), OCT, HVF, Optos, AR, reading glasses, Knowledge of EMR systems
• Willingness to travel to all office locations (Albany, Clifton Park and Troy)
