About the Role
The Japan Therapy Area Head (J-TA Head) in R&D Japan is accountable for the delivery of all project strategies led by Product Leaders (PLs) within the relevant Therapy Area (TA). This role leads the R&D Japan TA division, overseeing TA-specific teams and providing TA and Disease Area (DA) expertise for strategy development. The J-TA Head is responsible for the Japan TA portfolio strategy, prioritizing projects based on resources, PTS, eNPV, and potential cannibalization, and for developing PLs and TA-specific team leaders.
Responsibilities
- Lead definition and revision of Japan TA division objectives for product development.
- Co-create TA and/or DA strategy with global colleagues and refine as necessary.
- Lead PL(s) to co-create development strategies for relevant products for key Investment Decisions (IDs).
- Lead Japan's input to relevant TALT, GMed, iMed, Medi teams and communicate business context to Japan-based colleagues.
- Lead PL(s) to deliver tactical, cross-functional Japan development options and business cases aligned with product strategy.
- Develop knowledge of and use local market understanding to identify gaps between market needs and AZ portfolio or capabilities.
- Develop a future view of how local market needs may change and use this for strategy creation.
- Be accountable for the local TA, DA, and products Ad Boards led by the MSD.
- Ensure a cross-functional risk and opportunity management process within the TA portfolio.
- Ensure mitigation and contingency actions are agreed, activated, communicated, and delivered.
- Collaborate with other J-TA Heads to develop a view of cross-portfolio risks and opportunities.
- Ensure effective TA division management, including defined and followed norms and ways of working.
- Ensure effective communication and documentation within the TA division and Project Teams.
- Ensure TA contribution to the portfolio reporting cycle, including risk reporting, product briefs, and pipeline updates.
- Guide the TA division in understanding and integrating new business policies, initiatives, and capabilities.
- Ensure the quality of Japan R&D elements for relevant external asset evaluation.
Requirements
- At least 10 years of drug development experience.
- In-depth knowledge of at least one Therapy Area.
- Demonstrated leadership and management capability with a track record of successful results.
- History of successfully leading delivery of significant cross-functional activities.
- Proven ability to transition between roles effectively and learn rapidly in a new environment.
- Line management experience in an R&D function.
- Functional representative on global product development team(s).
- Experience of the R&D externalization deal flow process and delivery with an alliance partner.
- Ability to actively deploy a range of influencing and leadership styles, including Visionary Leadership.
- Ability to effectively manage team climate and dynamics in a cross-functional and cross-cultural setting.
