About the Role

Optus Network Engineering keeps Australia connected by owning the design, planning, delivery, and operation of one of Australia's largest telecommunications networks. The IP Automation & Tooling team develops and operates automation, observability, and data platforms for the IP network, aiming to transform it into an intelligent, self-healing platform. You will collaborate across Optus and with partners to deliver high standards for network reliability, performance, and operational efficiency, in a culture that welcomes experimentation and autonomy.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and architecture of scalable automation and observability platforms.
  • Drive technical initiatives from concept to production, making architectural decisions.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to team members.
  • Collaborate with network engineers, product teams, and stakeholders to translate operational needs into technical solutions.
  • Solve complex technical problems across the full stack.
  • Establish engineering best practices, coding standards, and introduce new technologies.
  • Participate in on-call rotation and incident response.

Requirements

  • Tertiary qualifications in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4+ years building and shipping production software, preferably in Golan and Python in complex technology environments.
  • Hands-on experience with Linux environments, event streaming platforms (Kafka or similar) and real-time data processing is desirable.
  • Experience with observability tools (Grafana, Victoria Metrics, Elasticsearch), CI/CD practices, databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB), and RESTful APIs.
  • Familiarity with GraphQL or gRPC is a plus.
  • Exposure to AI/ML frameworks (LangChain, PyTorch) or workflow orchestration tools (N8N, Temporal) highly valued.
  • Strong communication skills with ability to explain technical concepts to diverse audiences.
