About the Role
Registered nurses support the midwifery model of care in a community birth setting. They directly assist midwives in caring for clients throughout prenatal, labor, postpartum, and newborn care, and maintain clinical responsibilities to ensure the smooth operation of the birth center.
Responsibilities
- Complete orientation and understand The Coit House policies and procedures manual.
- Result normal labs & ultrasounds during office hours.
- Answer portal messages during office hours.
- Assist with statistics keeping during office hours.
- Maintain stock of medications and supplies during office hours.
- Assist with review of medical records from transfers into the practice.
- Conduct prenatal care visits in accordance with NYS scope of practice.
- Communicate prenatal data to the midwife in a timely manner.
- Provide or conduct labor support at the direction of the CNM.
- Set up the room for birth at the direction of the CNM.
- Monitor vital signs and fetal heart tones at the direction of the CNM.
- Assist with resuscitation at the direction of the CNM.
- Administer medications at the direction of the CNM.
- Provide early labor support.
- Assist with ongoing assessment of postpartum person and newborn.
- Provide postpartum education.
- Assist with discharge home.
- Schedule follow-up postpartum appointments.
- Maintain current certification in BLS and neonatal resuscitation.
- Assist in planning and implementation of in-service and drill programs for staff.
- Attend staff in-service programs and emergency drills.
- Participate in continuous quality improvement activities as assigned.
- Conduct twice yearly CQI reviews.
- Manage perinatal data registry.
- Perform monthly chart reviews.
- Attend staff meetings.
- Plan and implement drills.
Requirements
- Relevant experience in labor & delivery, mother/baby, or neonatal nursing.
- Nursing license in NYS.
- Background check.
- Physical ability to carry birth equipment up and down stairs, clean up after birth, and squat, bend, and reach to accommodate the woman’s chosen laboring positions.
- Technical skills to perform basic charting functions.
- NRP certification.
- CPR/BLS certification.
- Belief in midwifery model of care, out-of-hospital birth, physiologic birth, and breastfeeding.
