About the Role

S&P Dow Jones Indices is a leading global resource for index-based concepts, data, and research, home to iconic financial market indicators. This role supports the Global Legal, Compliance, Risk & Government Affairs Team, reporting to the Associate General Counsel and Managing Director for the Americas. The team provides comprehensive legal support to S&P Dow Jones Indices (S&P DJI), including advice on licensing indices for investment products, digital assets, DeFi, blockchain technology, data licensing, and collaborations. The position will serve as a trusted legal advisor on emerging DeFi, tokenization, and blockchain initiatives, helping to shape legal frameworks and evaluate novel business models.

Responsibilities

  • Play a leading role in shaping S&P Dow Jones Indices’ engagement with decentralized finance, digital assets, and blockchain-based market infrastructure.
  • Advise on innovative index solutions, data products, and technology collaborations at the intersection of traditional financial markets and emerging decentralized ecosystems.
  • Structure, draft, negotiate, and advise on complex commercial agreements across DeFi, digital assets, licensing indices for financial products, index data subscription and distribution, inbound data, and blockchain technology deployment.
  • Collaborate with legal, product, technology, and commercial leaders to provide practical, forward-looking, strategic, and legal advice on emerging products and business initiatives.
  • Support compliance with applicable policies and procedures, including confidentiality, insider trading, and compliance.
  • Assist the business in responding to requests for proposal and customer due diligence/risk questionnaires.
  • Undertake special projects as assigned by manager.

Requirements

  • J.D. or LLM and admitted to practice law in any of the states listed within the location.
  • 6+ years’ legal experience, including in-house legal experience, with a focus on commercial contract negotiation and drafting.
  • Demonstrated interest in and familiarity with financial services and investment products, decentralized finance, digital asset regulation, digital asset ecosystems, blockchain infrastructure, and tokenized assets.
  • Familiarity with data licensing, intellectual property principles, and business technology.
  • Excellent drafting, negotiating, and communication (both written and spoken) skills.
  • Capability to manage high-volume, complex environments with sound judgment and adaptability.
  • Ability to recognize and accommodate internal and external client needs while adequately protecting S&P DJI’s interests and mitigating liability risk.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Limited to persons with indefinite right to work in the United States.
