About the Role

The European Social Survey (ESS) HQ is seeking a candidate to manage the design and implementation of its CRONOS panel, the world’s first probability-based cross-national online panel. This role involves contributing to questionnaire design, project management of partner organizations, and monitoring fieldwork progress. The successful candidate will also work on the further development of the panel, including methodology and grant proposals, and may contribute to other ESS HQ activities.

Responsibilities

Contribute to the CRONOS panel questionnaire design and documentation process.
Project manage the work of Centerdata, GESIS, ESSEX, and Sikt to ensure smooth data collection, translation, weighting, and dissemination.
Manage preparations for CRONOS panel fieldwork, including assisting countries with sample files, design discussions, document preparation, questionnaire and contact message development, translation monitoring, and pre-testing.
Monitor CRONOS panel fieldwork progress in participating countries, identifying potential issues and proposing solutions.
Liaise with countries and project partners during fieldwork, ensuring adherence to timelines and engagement in activities to boost response rates and sample representativeness.
Conduct analysis of CRONOS panel data for monitoring and methodological purposes and write reports.
Undertake general administrative duties such as minute taking, event organizing, meeting preparations, and responding to user or country queries.
Liaise with members of the ESS Core Scientific Team, ESS advisory boards, National Coordinators, and external advisors.
Contribute to communication with external CRONOS data users.
Work with the ESS Head of Communications and the data archive team at Sikt to promote awareness of the CRONOS panel and its data.
Work with colleagues to produce the final design/methodology of the next iteration of the panel and contribute to drafting its specification.
Present information and results from the CRONOS panel to relevant teams and share outcomes via conferences and journals.
Contribute to grant proposal writing, particularly those involving the CRONOS panel.
Work with other members of the ESS HQ team on other activities related to the main ESS, including fieldwork preparations and monitoring, questionnaire design and pre-testing, and contributing to meeting planning and delivery.

Requirements

A good first degree in a relevant social science discipline (e.g., Sociology, Political Science, Psychology, International Relations).
At least two years’ experience of survey research in an applied environment (university centre, research institute, market research company).
Experience of self-completion (web/paper) approaches to surveys, ideally in a cross-national environment.
Familiarity with all stages of the survey lifecycle from sampling to data delivery in an applied survey environment.
Experience of planning and oversight of quantitative data collection, ideally in a comparative perspective.
Experience of questionnaire development, documentation, and pre-testing.
Familiarity/experience with project management processes.
Experience of working with large/varied teams and coordinating tasks among team members.
Ability to meet strict timetable deadlines, be highly organized, and able to prioritize tasks.
High level of interpersonal communication skills, both written and oral.
A high level of accuracy and meticulous attention to detail.
Ability to analyze problems and identify potential solutions.
The ability to work effectively on own initiative as well as part of a team.

The CRONOS panel has been supported by Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe funding and currently collects data in 11 countries with plans to expand.
The ESS General Assembly has agreed to try to integrate the CRONOS panel in the main ESS Work Programme from 2029 onwards, allowing the two survey infrastructures to operate in a complementary manner to support the social research landscape in Europe.
