About the Role

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines and maintaining a safe and clean working environment. Supports the organization's commitment to Quality Enhancement Programs (QEP) and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.

Responsibilities

Assist in providing patient-specific education regarding dialysis adequacy measures and disease process/access.
Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated.
Obtain pre and post-treatment vital signs and weight.
Initiate and monitor dialysis treatments, including programming machine settings and managing alarms.
Identify and intervene in intradialytic problems.
Discontinue dialysis treatments, obtain hemostasis, and apply dressings.
Evaluate patients before discharge.
Record accurate and timely treatment data, including vital signs and parameters.
Report significant patient changes to the registered nurse or supervisor.
Perform machine safety checks and report any unusual findings.
Perform and document interventions for unusual patient status.
Evaluate patients’ vascular access during treatment and report findings.
Obtain and prepare laboratory specimens.
Clean up blood spills immediately.
Manage supplies and equipment efficiently to prevent wastage.
Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision.
Assist in training applicable direct patient care staff.
Maintain environmental integrity and cleanliness of the dialysis area.
Clean and disinfect dialysis machines and equipment between treatments.
Perform required pre-treatment dialysis machine alarm testing.
Initiate Solution Delivery System (SDS) system.
Complete and document participation in CQI activities.
Enter all treatment data into the designated clinical application.
Review treatment sheets for completeness and ensure proper documentation.
Prepare initial patient charts and compile paperwork.
Prepare and print lab requisitions.
Collect, label, prepare, and store lab samples according to specifications.
Ensure collection of lab specimens by appropriate courier.
Assist in collecting information for infection control audits.
Support staff and patient adherence to infection control practices.
Follow infection control policies and procedures.
Reinforce infection control education for patients and families.
Follow patients through their first 4 weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional care.
Reinforce education and care related matters for new patients.
Liaise with FKC staff to ensure the best patient experience.
Assure patient understanding of home dialysis products and benefits.
Set up and perform treatments on all machines in the transitional care unit.
Assist in assuring patient understanding of treatment options, including peritoneal dialysis setup.
Assist with coordination of transition to patient’s modality choice.
Assist with supply ordering and inventory for TCU.

Requirements

High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
Must meet Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS)-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline.
All appropriate state licensure, education, and training (if any) required.
Demonstrated commitment to organization culture, values, and customer service standards.
Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or a related facility preferred.
Continued employment is dependent on successful completion of the organization dialysis training program.
Continued employment is dependent on successful completion of CPR certification.
Employees are required to take the Ishihara's Color Blindness test as a condition of employment.
Must be able to perform direct patient care, including heavy lifting and moving of patients.
Must be able to frequently stand for prolonged periods and bend over.
Must be able to occasionally push and/or pull equipment, exerting up to 15 pounds of force.
Must be able to frequently lift and lower solutions up to 30 lbs., and occasionally up to 40 lbs., as high as 5 feet.
