About the Role

The Supervisor, Microbiology will play a key role in ensuring the delivery of safe, efficient, and high-quality microbiology services. You will support daily operations, staff development, quality initiatives, and continuous improvement activities in a fast-paced, complex laboratory environment.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise day-to-day laboratory operations, coordinating workflow, staffing, and workload distribution.
  • Monitor turnaround times, productivity, and operational performance metrics to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Provide operational leadership, coaching, and mentoring to technical, clerical, and support staff.
  • Support staff onboarding, training, competency assessment, and cross-training.
  • Coordinate staffing adjustments, coverage for absences, and monitor overtime utilization.
  • Serve as a resource for operational, technical, and procedural issues.
  • Support implementation of new equipment, methodologies, tests, and laboratory information system enhancements.
  • Ensure compliance with quality management systems, accreditation standards, and safety requirements.
  • Monitor quality control and quality assurance activities, supporting audit preparation and inspections.
  • Investigate and document quality and safety incidents, including corrective actions.
  • Assist with implementation of departmental policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Monitor operational resources, including supplies and reagents, and support inventory management.
  • Collect and analyze operational, quality, and workload data to support decision-making.
  • Collaborate with physicians, clinicians, and interdisciplinary teams to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Participate in professional development, teaching, and quality improvement committees.

Requirements

  • Currently registered and in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO).
  • 3 years of recent microbiology laboratory experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience as a Charge Technologist, Lead Technologist, Acting Supervisor, or equivalent.
  • Experience working in a unionized healthcare environment (preferred).
  • Experience supporting implementation of new laboratory technologies, methodologies, equipment, or process improvement (preferred).
  • Previous formal supervisory or people leadership experience (preferred).
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history.

Skills

  • Strong knowledge of microbiology laboratory operations and quality management systems.
  • Understanding of accreditation requirements, quality assurance, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Effective leadership, coaching, mentoring, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with laboratory information systems and computerized laboratory processes.
