About the Role
The Adult English Language and Literacy (AELL) department provides ESOL and adult literacy instruction for The New York Public Library. Intake Advisors are responsible for recruiting students, determining eligibility through testing and interviews, monitoring attendance, and supporting student retention to ensure program success.
Responsibilities
- Provide case management services including information sessions, intake appointments, assessment, goal setting, and placement
- Monitor student progress and conduct daily follow-ups with absent students to encourage program continuation
- Input student data, including contact information, assessment results, attendance, and outcomes into agency databases
- Test all students at the end of each cycle
- Maintain paper record files according to NYSED requirements
- Conduct outreach to city and non-profit agencies to increase enrollment and build community partnerships
- Connect students with community resources and document referral success
- Provide workshops on technology and library services
- Supervise one hourly Student Mentor
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in education, English, literacy, or a related field
- Certification in Best Plus and TABE (must be obtained within the first 3 months)
- At least 1 year of administrative or instructional experience with non-native English speaking adult learners
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds
- Ability to travel within NYC (Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island)
- Availability to work a minimum of 2 late nights per week and Saturdays as required
Skills
- Data entry and database utilization
- Knowledge of community resources and social services for high-needs populations
- Intermediate Microsoft Office and Google Drive proficiency
- Proficiency in Zoom for meetings
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work with culturally-diverse communities
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
