About the Role

The Industry Solutions Engineering (ISE) team is a global engineering organization that works directly with customers to leverage the latest technologies and solve their toughest challenges. We collaborate with customer engineers to develop cloud-based solutions, working with product teams, partners, and open-source communities. This role involves developing broadly applicable, high-impact solution patterns and open-source software assets. The Principal Data Scientist will drive high-impact engineering projects, transforming customer missions using AI and cloud solutions. Data scientists on this team possess data management expertise and develop statistical techniques to analyze data and identify patterns. You will be part of a cross-functional team working with strategic customers and their engineers to build innovative solutions, thriving in a role that involves diverse technologies, solving business problems, contributing to open source, and collaborating with Microsoft product teams.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee data acquisition, ensuring proper formatting and description.
  • Coach engineers in data cleaning and analysis best practices.
  • Identify gaps in current data sets and drive ethics and privacy discussions around data collection and preparation.
  • Evaluate team models and recommend improvements.
  • Drive best practices for models and develop operational models that run at scale.
  • Conduct thorough reviews of data analysis and modeling techniques.
  • Identify and invent new evaluation methods.
  • Research and maintain deep industry knowledge, including trends and technologies, to identify strategy opportunities and contribute to thought leadership.
  • Write extensible code that spans multiple features.
  • Develop expertise in proper debugging techniques.
  • Define business, customer, and solution strategy goals.
  • Partner with other teams to identify and explore new opportunities.
  • Acknowledge customer needs and offer pragmatic solutions aligned with their data capabilities.
  • Embody company culture and values.

Requirements

  • Doctorate in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 5+ years data-science experience OR Master's Degree AND 7+ years data-science experience OR Bachelor's Degree AND 10+ years data science experience OR equivalent experience.
  • Doctorate in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 8+ years data-science experience OR Master's Degree AND 10+ years data-science experience OR Bachelor's Degree AND 12+ years data-science experience OR equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years customer-facing, project-delivery experience, professional services, and/or consulting experience.
  • Must have authorization to work in the United States that does not now or in the future require employer sponsorship.

  • USD $142,800 - $274,800 per year (U.S. typical base pay range)
  • USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year (San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area)
