About the Role

Responsible for preparing the sterile field for surgical operations, assisting surgeons, and supporting the surgical team during operations. Ensures adherence to regulations and policies for optimal patient care. May also be responsible for specific procedures and orienting new staff.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare the sterile field for surgical operations.
  • Set up sterile instruments.
  • Assist surgeons in gowning and gloving.
  • Drape patients for surgery.
  • Pass instruments and supplies to the surgical team.
  • Hold retractors during surgery.
  • Anticipate surgeons' needs during surgery.
  • Distribute supplies.
  • Perform equipment maintenance, testing, and setup.
  • Adhere to all local/state/federal regulations, codes, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform specific procedures.
  • Orient other staff to the department.

Requirements

  • HS Diploma or GED.
  • Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program or possess certification evidencing education.
  • Military training as a scrub tech.
  • BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification.
  • Surgical Technician Certification (TS-C, CST, or NRST) is required to be eligible for incentive (if allowed per the Collective Bargaining Agreement for union represented employees).
  • 1 year of recent relevant experience.
  • General knowledge of surgical tools, procedures, views, and equipment.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of data and instructions.
  • Basic understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology.
  • Written and verbal communication skills to explain sensitive information clearly and professionally.
  • Well-developed time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments and work within standardized operating procedures and scientific methods.
  • General knowledge of computer applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and Outlook).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to accomplish multiple tasks in an environment with interruptions.
  • Ability to identify, evaluate and resolve standard problems.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with peers and other healthcare providers.
