About the Role
The Support Worker role involves supporting individuals experiencing mental distress by providing a welcoming, safe, and compassionate environment. The Southwark Community Sanctuary operates in the evenings and weekends as an alternative to A&E, assisting people in developing safety plans, coping techniques, personal goals, and connecting them with local resources. The role ideally requires a commitment of at least one day per week.
Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain relationships of trust with service users to build engagement.
- Support individuals experiencing mental distress in an empathic and professional manner.
- Assist service users in setting, prioritizing, and achieving personal goals to enhance hope, motivation, and ambition.
- Collaborate with individuals to develop and review robust assessments, safety management plans, and personalized recovery support plans.
- Contribute to the protection of individuals from the risk of abuse and self-harm.
- Value the lived experience of service users and empower them to support each other and improve the Together service.
- Communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including marginalized or minority groups.
- Share knowledge, skills, and experience within the team while maintaining confidentiality.
- Liaise with professionals from other agencies and make onward referrals, connecting service users to community opportunities.
- Record and report on activities and outcomes, sharing examples of good practice.
- Create timely, concise, and accurate records understandable to the service user, utilizing Together's computer-based systems.
- Participate in mandatory and job-related training and commit to continuous professional development.
- Maintain professional boundaries in all interactions with service users.
- Work evenings and weekends.
Requirements
- Minimum of GCSE or Level II qualification in English, or equivalent.
- Experience working with individuals experiencing mental distress and in partnership with them.
- Ability to establish and maintain a safe environment.
- Willingness and ability to collaborate with colleagues and other organizations.
- Basic competence in using email, word processing software, and computerized systems for records and reports.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills related to housing, welfare benefits, education, and relationships.
- Ability to produce clear records and reports in English.
- Experience supporting vulnerable individuals through paid work, voluntary work, or life experience.
- Lived experience of mental distress.
- NVQ Level II in Health and Social Care, or equivalent.
