About the Role

This role focuses on providing medical and clinical support services to patients, specifically performing surgical services duties involving excision or incision of a patient's body. The position ensures a safe environment for patients undergoing invasive procedures or surgery, requiring specialized knowledge gained through education, training, and experience. This entry-level role involves routine tasks under close supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the set-up for specific surgical procedures, updating physician preference cards.
  • Sets up individual case carts with appropriate instruments and equipment for upcoming cases.
  • Performs the role of the scrub person during surgical procedures, maintaining aseptic technique and the sterile field.
  • Anticipates the surgeon’s needs, passes instruments, and demonstrates knowledge of anatomy.
  • Follows proper medication administration and maintains accurate counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments.
  • Carries out technical tasks other than cutting, clamping, and suturing of tissues.
  • Applies electrocautery to clamps under the supervision of the surgeon.
  • Adapts to changes in work schedule positively and professionally.
  • Demonstrates personal initiative in maintaining skill levels across all specialties.
  • Demonstrates cost consciousness in the care and use of equipment and supplies.
  • Functions effectively in emergency situations.
  • Assists in transferring the patient and prepares surgical specimens for the circulating nurse.
  • May assist anesthesiologists and other personnel in setting up equipment and obtaining supplies.
  • Assists in general cleaning of the Operating Room.
  • Provides on-call coverage as required by the Department.
  • Attends staff meetings and in-services related to the department.
  • Seeks experience to expand and maintain knowledge and skills.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology Program OR Massachusetts's Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
  • Surgical Technician certification through an accredited program or within 12 months of completing program.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Occasional lifting of 30-35 lbs and turning patients.
  • Prolonged standing and walking.
  • Occasional twisting, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling, sitting, kneeling, and squatting.
  • Requires manual dexterity using fine hand manipulations for performing procedures and computer keyboard.
  • Requires ability to see computer screen, reports, and perform assistance in procedures with accuracy.
  • Requires ability to hear instructions from physician and nursing staff.

Skills

  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work with detailed, confidential material and information.
  • Computer experience.
  • Ability to follow directions and work with precision under pressure.
  • Maintains sensitivity, maturity, and flexibility in coping with difficult situations.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of operative procedures, equipment, and routine.
