About the Role

The Registered Nurse (RN) assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and supervises individual patient care on a nursing unit/department according to established policies and procedures. Provides supervision of non-RN personnel and delegates/supervises unit activities when in the charge role. May work in other departments as needed to maintain a high level of service.

Responsibilities

• Assesses the patient's physical and psychosocial condition on an ongoing basis.
• Develops, communicates, and documents a plan of care reflecting individualized patient problems and interventions.
• Implements and coordinates the plan of care in collaboration with the healthcare team.
• Evaluates the effectiveness of the plan of care and patient's response to care.
• Plans for education after assessing individual learning needs and readiness.
• Functions as a preceptor to new staff.
• Meets performance expectations for customer service, teamwork, resource utilization, and staff and self-development.
• Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the department/unit.
• Initiates patient/family health education related to cardiovascular risk reduction/prevention.
• Recognizes the need for and initiates a multidisciplinary approach to patient needs.
• Conducts outpatient and community presentations on cardio-pulmonary health.
• Demonstrates knowledge of arrhythmia detection/intervention and basic 12-lead ECG interpretation.
• Demonstrates ability to conduct and interpret regular and nuclear ESTs and tilt table studies.
• Demonstrates critical thinking skills and self-direction in managing complications associated with exercise or cardiac emergencies in stress testing.
• Initiates/modifies plan of care/exercise prescription based upon understanding of hemodynamic response to exercise.
• Participates in transition of care role, including documentation, intervention, and post-PCI follow-up calls.
• Cross-trained to perform TEE and some radiology medication procedures, including moderate sedation.
• Possesses knowledge and skill in the operation of all stress and tilt equipment.
• Performs quality improvement activities related to primary duties and assists with maintaining statistics.
• Maintains inventory in cardiology stress areas.
• Provides appropriate documentation with authorization for services as needed to assure reimbursement.
• Establishes and maintains IV access.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited BSN program preferred.
• Proficient in use of computer software, including electronic patient records.
• Ability to use the internet for literature searches regarding patient care.
• Two years recent critical care, CCU, or medical step-down unit experience required.
• Previous stress testing and/or cath lab experience preferred.
• Valid State of Connecticut Registered Nurse License.
• ACLS and BLS required.
• Moderate sedation validation.
• Certification in stress testing preferred.
