About the Role

Ensures the highest standards of environmental safety and operational excellence by effectively managing the day-to-day operations of the assigned MRF and maintains cost management within the MRF. The successful candidate is a visible, hands-on leader who thrives under pressure, makes sound real-time decisions, and drives a strong culture of accountability, employee engagement, and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures smooth operation of site, including: gatehouse, sorting, loading.
  • Ensures system is performing at highest level.
  • Minimizes handling and operational costs.
  • Continually works to reduce turnaround time for trucks in and out of site.
  • Regularly proposes means of operational improvement.
  • Acts as a liaison, where necessary, for community relationships and customers.
  • Oversee and manage WM contractual obligations.
  • Complies with and ensures adherence to WM’s Mission to Zero standards and regulations to encourage safe and efficient operations.
  • Submits reasonable budget information and analyzes data versus year-to-date data and prior year budget.
  • Assists in creating a positive team-oriented environment through employee development and motivation.
  • Ensures the cleanliness and maintenance of the physical property of the MRF through inspections and preventive maintenance programs with supervisors/employees.
  • Oversees personnel needs of the MRF including selecting, coaching, and training employees and evaluating employee performance.
  • Provides input into termination, compensation, and promotion decisions.
  • Conducts and/or attends and contributes to periodic safety meetings.
  • Provides training and presentations as needed in a positive and professional manner.
  • Updates and submits required reports in a timely manner.
  • Identify and eliminate waste to improve flow, reduce downtime, and optimize labor and equipment utilization.
  • Lead problem-solving initiatives using structured methodologies.
  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement with measurable results.
  • Build, coach, and develop supervisors and frontline teams.
  • Set clear expectations and hold teams accountable for performance and behavior.
  • Foster a positive, engaged, and high-performing work environment.
  • Motivate teams during high-pressure situations while maintaining focus and discipline.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree (accredited), or in lieu of degree, High School Diploma or GED (accredited) and 4 years of relevant work experience.
  • 7 years of relevant work experience (in addition to education requirement).
  • Experience leading a team of 3-4 salaried employees including supervisors (as well as above required experience and education).
  • Strong leadership presence with the ability to inspire and influence teams.
  • Calm and decisive under pressure, with strong problem-solving ability.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Data-driven mindset with strong analytical capabilities.
  • High level of ownership, accountability, and integrity.
  • Must have, or be willing to obtain, a REAL ID or TSA-approved alternative for potential air travel or access to federal property.
