About the Role

The Deputy Managing Editor will help lead SFGATE's breaking news vertical editors, contributing to content ideation, editorial calendar oversight, data analysis, and story editing, while bringing extensive editorial and managerial experience.

Responsibilities

  • Consistently generate content ideas and workshop others' ideas to maintain an ambitious editorial calendar.
  • Oversee editorial decisions, meet deadlines, and manage a team of editors autonomously.
  • Ensure editorial operations run effectively and meet the company vision through strong organizational skills.
  • Manage 4-5 direct reports and oversee a total management line of approximately a dozen individuals.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in writing, editing, and management of writers or editors in a publication or digital media environment.
  • Comfortable overseeing a growing staff in day-to-day site operations, including assigning and editing stories.
  • Ability to respond nimbly to cultural and news events, identifying SFGATE angles that connect with readers.
  • Keen eye for analytics and ability to use data for decision-making and identifying team opportunities.
  • Skilled in motivating a team and maintaining personal and team organization.
  • Reside in the Bay Area or be willing to relocate.
  • Passion for journalism and storytelling.
  • Understanding of the SFGATE brand and voice.
