About the Role
The Program Director is responsible for the successful day-to-day operation of the after-school program, ensuring quality services and supervising the program and staff.
Responsibilities
- Oversees day-to-day operations of the DYCD COMPASS contract, Holiday Camp & Summer programming.
- Coordinates outreach, application, and enrollment processes.
- Ensures the program exceeds an 85% Average Daily Attendance.
- Implements core components including Academic Support, STEM, Academic & Creative Arts Enrichment, Physical Activity/Healthy Living, Parent/Caretaker Involvement, and Leadership.
- Partners with school administration to align after-school activities with day school learning and vision.
- Seeks partnership opportunities to enhance programming.
- Coordinates part-time staff schedules and program activities.
- Supervises and provides leadership to part-time staff.
- Serves as the primary liaison for school administration, parents, and community entities.
- Ensures program participants are engaged in daily activities and programming.
- Attends regular school meetings, staff meetings, training, and workshops.
- Participates in advocacy for program needs through community coalition building and feedback surveys.
- Identifies and schedules field trips and seeks new opportunities for participants.
- Prepares and maintains timelines for major events and initiatives.
- Works closely with school administration for school-day support.
- Maintains a professional and positive working relationship with school administration and personnel.
- Seeks partnership opportunities and brings in at least 3 new partners annually.
- Facilitates live and pre-recorded activities.
- Uses web-based platforms (Zoom, Google Classrooms) to engage youth.
- Monitors participant engagement and safety during remote sessions.
- Facilitates wellness checks/calls to families.
- Follows remote working plan, policies, and procedures.
- Maintains remote/virtual attendance logs and records.
- Ensures remote links, videos, and content are age-appropriate and non-offensive.
- Ensures program goals and objectives are met by deadlines.
- Conducts periodic assessments and evaluations to refine curricula and programming.
- Conducts parent orientations and parent meetings.
- Ensures quality assurance of data reported to DYCD via the DYCD Connect database platform.
- Ensures attendance tracking and reporting meets contractual requirements.
- Responds to all electronic and phone communication within 2 business days.
- Ensures compliance with DOH School-Aged Child Care and DOH Summer Day Camp regulations.
- Conducts quarterly self-checklist inspections.
- Coordinates and executes major events and activities with other GSS Program Directors.
- Communicates with school personnel, administration, and DYCD key stakeholders.
- Prepares a monthly calendar of events, programs, meetings, and activities.
- Creates a budget plan to support program needs and ensures timely spending.
- Collaborates on cross-borough and agency-wide events and strategic planning.
- Ensures adherence to DYCD/DOE social media policy.
- Commits to Grand St. for two years if awarded a funded personal development or education grant.
- Maintains and follows up with custodians regarding facility issues.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Program Supervisor/CPO.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree required.
- At least three (3) years of experience working in a community center or school-based after-school program.
- At least two years of supervisory experience.
- Required to obtain SACC Program Director's (30-hour) credentials.
- Ability to work independently, assess priorities, and take initiative.
- Effective oral, written, and collaborative skills.
- Experience in lesson planning, curriculum development, and implementation of structured programming for middle school students.
- Familiarity with Program Budgeting and fiscal management is a plus.
- Familiarity with DYCD Connect and database management is a plus.
- Ability to maintain State Central Registry (SCR) clearance and fingerprint clearance throughout employment.
- Experience working with students in urban school and/or community-based settings.
- Must be computer literate.
- Capacity to thrive under pressure while working on multiple tasks and projects.
- Spanish speaking is a plus.
- Must be able to build and maintain a positive working relationship with the school’s administration and personnel.
- Knowledge of the public education system and positive youth development best practices.
- Strong public speaking, writing, and organizational skills.
- Must demonstrate knowledge in New York State Learning Standards.
- Knowledge in STEM, Health & Sexuality, Careers & Life Planning, Sports & Adventure, and Academic Enrichment is highly desirable.
- Must provide a resume and cover letter.
- Must provide three (3) professional references upon selection, including at least one from a former supervisor.
- Must be able to obtain required clearances before a job offer can be made.

Work Type
- School Year: Monday – Friday; 10 am – 6 pm, some evenings/weekends may be required.
- Summer: 8 am – 4 pm or 10 am - 6 pm
