About the Role
The OB First Assist collaborates with the surgeon and the healthcare team to ensure safe operations and optimal patient outcomes. This role requires specific knowledge, skills, and judgment in clinical practice, working under the surgeon's direction during the operative phase of labor.
Responsibilities
- Apply knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative technique relevant to assisted procedures.
- Apply principles of asepsis and infection control.
- Assist with or independently perform patient positioning, prepping, and draping as directed.
- Provide hemostasis by clamping, coagulating, ligating, and other methods as directed.
- Provide exposure using instruments, retractors, suctioning, and sponging, while observing the operative field and anticipating surgeon's needs.
- Handle tissue, suture layers (peritoneum, fascia, subcutaneous, skin), and approximate tissue layers as directed.
- Clean the wound and apply surgical dressings.
- Affix and stabilize all drains.
- Assist in transferring the patient from the operating room.
- Uphold CARES values (commitment, action, respect, excellence, and service).
Requirements
- Must live within 30 minutes of the hospital campus.
- NYS certification/registration as a Physician Assistant.
- NYS Licensure and current Registration required.
- DEA license required.
- BCLS certification required.
- Able to gain appropriate FFTH privileges required.
- ACLS recommended.
- Previous experience in an operating room preferred.

- Graduation from an AMA approved school as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner with RNFA certification required.
- Meets continuing education requirements of the applicable discipline board.
Salary/Compensations
- $10.00/hour to be on call
- $140.00/hour if called in with a guarantee of 2 hours.
