About the Role
The Food Services Worker collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to plan and prepare nutritionally balanced and culturally appropriate meals for program participants and their children. This role also serves as a resource for staff and clients regarding meal planning and preparation.
Responsibilities
- Introduce and clarify role to program participants during intake, gathering information on dietary/cultural needs and health pertinent information such as food allergies.
- Support participants in setting goals related to their food needs.
- Facilitate house meetings and workshops on food, nutrition, and cooking on limited budgets.
- Prepare a weekend evening meal plan.
- Ensure staple food items, including culturally diverse foods, are stocked and available to program participants.
- Manage the kitchen in accordance with current Health and Safety standards (e.g., Toronto Public Health and YWCA Toronto).
- Maintain grocery supplies by ordering food electronically and over the telephone for delivery, including cleaning supplies and paper products within the allocated budget.
- Ensure all areas are cleaned during and after meal preparation.
- Wash dishes, pots, pans, and other equipment used to prepare lunch and dinner meals Monday to Friday.
- Monitor for pests in collaboration with property services.
Requirements
- A generalized education at the college level, including training/certificate in public health standards and general nutrition.
- Food Handlers Certificate required.
- 3-5 years directly related work experience.
- Experience preparing culturally diverse meals for a multicultural environment.
- Experience teaching nutrition and working with women in crisis.
- Communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Computer literacy required.
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task in a busy environment.
- A vulnerable sector police reference check is required prior to hiring.
- Knowledge of a second language and/or culture would be an asset.
