About the Role
Portledge School seeks an enthusiastic, student-centered Varsity Boys Lacrosse Assistant Coach to support the Head Coach in creating a positive, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate environment that fosters the growth of student-athletes. This part-time, temporary, seasonal position reports to the Director of Athletics and is ideal for a coach passionate about player development and fostering a love of the game.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Head Coach in planning and leading engaging, well-organized practices.
- Help develop individual and team skills, including stick work, passing, catching, shooting, dodging, defensive positioning, transition play, and game strategy.
- Create a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment that encourages effort, growth, and sportsmanship.
- Reinforce the program's expectations for character, teamwork, accountability, and respect.
- Assist with game preparation, in-game coaching, player evaluation, and post-game development.
- Supervise student-athletes during practices, games, travel, and team activities.
- Support the implementation of practice plans that challenge experienced players while developing emerging athletes.
- Communicate effectively with the Head Coach, student-athletes, parents, and the Athletic Department.
- Support the overall mission, philosophy, and values of Portledge Athletics.
- Ensure compliance with all school, league, and safety regulations.
- Collaborate with coaches across all levels of the boys lacrosse program.
- Serve as a positive mentor and role model, supporting the academic, athletic, and personal growth of student-athletes.
Requirements
- Previous coaching and/or playing experience in boys lacrosse.
- Strong knowledge of lacrosse fundamentals, strategy, and player development.
- Ability to teach and motivate student-athletes with diverse skill levels and competitive experience.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to fostering a positive, inclusive, and student-centered team culture.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a coaching staff.
- Ability to serve as a positive role model who demonstrates integrity, professionalism, and a commitment to student-athlete success.
- Experience working with high school-aged student-athletes (preferred).
- Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certification (preferred or willingness to obtain).
