About the Role

Gibson Dunn, a leading global law firm, seeks a Senior Billing Manager to join its Billing Team in Los Angeles, Century City, Orange County, San Francisco, or Palo Alto. This role is integral to providing exemplary client service and ensuring adherence to firm and client policies, requiring independent judgment, diplomacy, and initiative in handling confidential matters.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, train, motivate, and lead a team of direct reports, contributing to their development and advancement by setting performance goals.
  • Meet regularly with Billing Managers and Supervisors to identify problematic inventory, address roadblocks, and provide recommendations for issue resolution.
  • Coordinate with the Billing Management Team to identify required competencies, address deficiencies, and administer training.
  • Expertly manage WIP, A/R, and on-account inventories for assigned partners, ensuring accuracy and updates.
  • Liaise with various teams (Billing, eBilling, Accounting, Finance, Pricing) to coordinate corrective actions for billing issues.
  • Perform ad hoc analyses of client accounts regarding billing histories, matter performance, and invoice adjustments, presenting findings to meet high client service standards.
  • Manage complex Alternative Fee Arrangements (AFAs), including tracking and client reporting.
  • Collaborate with Billing Supervisors and Managers to support current billing processes, schedules, and workloads, completing special projects as needed.
  • Drive process improvement and technology adoption initiatives, including evaluating and implementing billing automation tools and AI-assisted invoice review.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and retain high-performing billing teams across multiple offices or time zones.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and tact in resolving problems and handling confidential matters.
  • Strong strategic thinking skills to translate billing data into actionable recommendations.
  • Ability to manage competing requests and prioritize according to firm and client deadlines.
  • Advanced proficiency in data analysis and financial reporting, including Excel and billing system reporting tools.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Exemplary customer service orientation.
  • Highly motivated, team-oriented with an ownership mentality.
  • Flexibility to work overtime and weekends as needed.
