About the Role

The New York City Justice Peer Initiative (JPI) aims to enhance opportunities for the Justice Peer workforce through professional development, state workforce certification, employer technical assistance, and policy efforts. JPI seeks to foster a workforce of Justice Peers who can lead in designing and delivering solutions for individuals with behavioral health needs impacted by the criminal legal system. This role supports increased access to Justice Peer services, provides economic opportunities for justice-involved individuals in recovery, and advances criminal legal system transformation by centering the expertise of impacted individuals. The Center for Alternative Sentencing & Employment Services (CASES) is incubating JPI and will employ the successful candidate, offering excellent benefits.

Responsibilities

Carry a caseload of 25-30 participants seeking certification and employment as Justice Peers.
Build trusting relationships and provide one-on-one support and coaching through the certification, job search, and employment process.
Conduct weekly outreach and presentations at criminal legal system agencies and community groups to identify eligible participants.
Perform eligibility screening, intake, and assessments to determine service needs.
Develop individualized peer certification and employment plans.
Oversee barrier removal (e.g., identification, housing, clothing) before and after placement to ensure retention.
Deliver hard and soft skills coaching, capacity building, and digital literacy workshops.
Meet regularly with participants to monitor progress towards goals.
Meet program enrollment and job placement goals.
Provide mutual peer support and leverage lived experience for professional development.
Document all participant contacts, activities, and outcomes in the case management system.
Coordinate and supervise participant internships with JPI.
Model professionalism, cultivate a safe environment, and motivate participants towards full-time employment.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree or at least 5 years of relevant work experience.
Directly impacted by the criminal legal system.
Eligible to become a certified peer specialist within six months of employment.
Experience and understanding of the criminal legal system (CLS), the role of peer support within the CLS, and navigating the NYC CLS.
Experience and strong knowledge of NYS peer certification, peer recovery support principles, peer support for justice-involved individuals, trauma-informed services, and Justice Peer careers.
Experience developing individual employment plans and assisting participants in finding employment.
Proficient with online training, digital literacy, Zoom, case management systems (e.g., Salesforce), and MS Office Suite.
Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity, equity, and belonging.
Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, presentation, and interpersonal).
