About the Role
This Principal Software Engineering position at VP level focuses on leading document and workflow automation, and AI-enabled solutions within Equity Derivatives Technology. The role involves combining strong engineering fundamentals, distributed systems experience, and practical generative AI to deliver business value through iterative development on a complex, business-critical platform.
Responsibilities
- Lead document/workflow automation and platform modernisation; define scalable architecture for distributed, business-critical systems.
- Drive engineering excellence, quality and operational resilience; mentor engineers through design reviews and hands-on coaching.
- Own end-to-end delivery of strategic initiatives, partnering with business stakeholders to translate requirements into solutions and deliver value via rapid iteration.
- Participate actively in agile ceremonies (stand-ups, planning, retrospectives, showcases) alongside business owners and other agile teams across the global fleet.
- Champion AI-assisted and agentic development, applying generative AI to accelerate delivery and productivity.
- Define governance/guardrails for AI-enabled development; evaluate emerging technologies for practical application.
- Design scalable, event-driven applications, services and REST APIs; improve CI/CD, observability and deployment automation.
- Design with performance, memory efficiency, capacity and reusability in mind, conducting capacity analysis and management while partnering with infrastructure/platform teams to build reusable capabilities.
- Support incident management, root-cause analysis and continuous improvement through automation and monitoring.
- Ensure solutions meet security, regulatory and operational requirements.
- Support and lead different phases of the product lifecycle including analysis, development and testing.
- Develop new and existing components in Java.
- Work with front end application development in HTML 5, Angular.
- Be a proactive member of an agile development team, focusing on efficient application delivery to meet business KPIs.
- Promote best practices in terms of TDD, development tools and technologies.
- Take part in ceremonies and interact with business owners and stakeholders as well as other agile teams across the fleet.
- Constant interaction with front office business users, analysing and gathering requirements.
- Good collaboration with members from the wider global team, as well as neighbouring teams and systems such as pricing and trade capture.
Requirements
- Extensive hands-on engineering experience in financial services or similarly demanding environments, including complex distributed systems.
- Track record leading technical initiatives while staying hands-on, working directly with business stakeholders and mentoring engineers.
- Experience with iterative delivery practices and performance/memory profiling to diagnose and resolve production issues.
- Demonstrated leadership skills in managing and leading software development teams to deliver high-quality products on time and within budget.
- Strong understanding of software development methodologies, such as Agile, Scrum, and DevOps, with the ability to implement best practices.
- Excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, and executives.
- Proven track record in strategic planning, resource allocation, and project management to drive successful software development initiatives.
- Ability to analyse and assess technical requirements, risks, & constraints to inform decisions and prioritize tasks accordingly.
- Proficient in software development tools & technologies, strong technical background to guide and support team members.
- Strong problem-solving skills to address complex technical challenges and drive innovation within the software engineering team.
- Previous commercially proven experience is required, with a strong desire to develop your skills more widely.
- Equity derivatives product knowledge is not a pre-requisite but it is advantageous.
